Beating The Heat at Disney World
This week, the Gold Key Adventurers Society gathers to share some tips on how to beat the heat while visiting Walt Disney World in Florida during the peak summer season. To avoid the scorching heat, we suggest going to the parks early in the morning and late in the evening, taking breaks during the middle of the day, and spending time at the pool when it's hottest. For those staying overnight or longer, choosing to stay at a Walt Disney World resort hotel can enhance the overall experience by taking advantage of early entry and extended park hours, and hopping between parks to avoid the heat from the hottest ones, such as Animal Kingdom and Epcot.
When it comes to seeking ways to escape the heat, we share with listeners the various indoor attractions that provide a good respite. The Magic Kingdom has indoor attractions like PhilharMagic and Enchanted Tales with Belle. In Epcot, indoor options like Living with the Land and The Three Caballeros boat ride are recommended. In Hollywood Studios, the light show at night is beautiful as is Toy Story Midway Mania. We also share our favorite cooling gear for staying comfortable and suggest using handheld fans, lightweight, rechargeable fans, and cooling neck gaiters. We also caution listeners against spending too much on overpriced cooling towels and suggest using a bandana or wet ball cap. Additionally, we share fun facts about the Disney parks, including some history and trivia.
We also discuss some of our favorite pools and water attractions in Walt Disney World, including Stormalong Bay and the Big Blue Pool. We even suggest finding rest and respite at pool bars and sit-down meals on the hot days. We emphasize the importance of staying on-site to quickly return to the resort and avoiding traveling off-property during peak season.
For those looking to relax and avoid the heat on Florida's hottest summer days, some tips include arranging for preferred parking or utilizing the Skyliner. We also recommend indulging in some treats like Dole Whip or a citrus swirl, and drinks from Trader Sam's, and the pool bars at Riviera and Nomad Lounge. We also discuss an upcoming Indiana Jones movie and share some alternative options for cooling down, taking a humorous note in the popular song and making a funny joke.
We close the show with some recommendations for staying hydrated while visiting theme parks and for avoiding heat stroke and dehydration. We suggest bringing water bottles or simply asking for water at quick serve counters. We also discuss drinking electrolyte beverages like Powerade or smart water for salt replenishment. And we remind our listeners that it's important to stay cool and not party too hard during the hot Florida summers, and to take breaks when necessary. So go out there, follow these tips and have a great time at Walt Disney World!

Guys, I need some help. What is it? Help.
Help. I'm heading down to Walt Disney World in a few days and it's going to be like 95. So long, slot.
A whole freaking time. Don't do it. I mean, especially just like two weeks ago, it was colder.
It was hotter in Michigan than it was in Orlando.
Now the tables have turned, it's 50 degrees overnight in Michigan and chilly during the day.
I had a winter coat on yesterday.
I'm wearing a sweatshirt right now. It's only like 60 degrees outside.
[2:18] That's not so in the Orlando, but it's summertime. Yeah, I guess I should expect it.
It's time for summer vacation at Walt Disney World Florida campus.
A local Orlando area friend of mine texted me yesterday and I quote, the depths of hell have started here.
[2:40] All right. That's what we're headed for. Can't wait to head down there over the weekend.
In the words of one Amy Reid.
I question my decision making skills, but it's for a good cause.
So it is a good cause.
It is a good cause. I'd say it seems like you're excited to be heading out on the Star Cruiser, Dan, my son showed me a text message from you this morning. That was just a photo of the bridge, the star cruiser.
Oh, it was that it was the epic photo of Aiden on the bridge, looking out into the depths of space.
So he said, I think he's excited.
I was just full star Wars costume on the hottest day of the year.
[3:25] I can't wait. I got a t-shirt this time instead of a long-sleeve linen shirt.
Oh, good idea. For my smuggler costume, so we're good.
No, I just wanted to, I wasn't sure if he had that epic photo.
I want to make sure he had.
I hope your Star Wars character is like a space surfer who wears a Star Citizen t-shirt.
Oh, now I'm going to have to totally retool my outfit. I've only got a few days.
Short of being a space surfer, I was wondering, do you guys have some ideas to help me and our listeners beat the heat when we visit Central Florida this summer? So many ideas, so many tips, Stan.
Timing, timing. I know you don't, that may not work for you on your Star Wars, Star Cruiser trip, but generally speaking, go early and then go late.
[4:13] If you can help it, take breaks in the midday. Yeah.
Staying in a Walt Disney World resort hotel is the way to go in the summertime because you can take advantage of that early entry and get into the park you want to go to a, little bit before the rest of the crowds, bang out some of the rides.
And then as the heat starts climbing, you can get the heck out of there and go back to your resort and spend some time at the pool.
That's always my biggest, yes, that's always been my number one tip for summer vacation at Walt Disney World is taking advantage of spending your time at the pool at the hottest part of the day.
And people think the hottest part of the day is like noon, but really it's like two to five. Yeah.
And then you can go back late.
Go get dinner in a park or at a wherever, but go back out. And then often they have later park hours, especially in the summertime, the parks are open later. So go back out and enjoy, go to dinner and then go into a park late.
They're often open till 10, 11, even 12 o'clock. Go back in and see some fireworks and do some rides at night when it's not so oppressive.
And if you're hopping, if you don't want to go back to your hotel, you got the park hoppers.
Conveniently, that hopping time is right around when the height of the heat hits, so you don't.
[5:42] Maybe plan on being in the really hot parks. Epcot is notoriously just because of all the concrete radiating heat everywhere.
And also Animal Kingdom because the giant berm walks all.
There is not a single breeze in the Animal Kingdom park.
It is a morning park in the summer. Yeah.
Hit those in the morning at hopping time, go to one of the cooler parks, one, that has more inside stuff to do.
And I will stay. Most of the queues and stuff are generally inside, so getting from right to right can, be hot and sunny, but once you're in line, most of the time, about 90% of the time, you're in an air-conditioned space or covered with fans blowing at you.
So it's really not that bad.
[6:34] That brings up another one of my tips, which is plan out your time to include lots of indoor attractions and there's a lot of good ones and there are a lot of classics that are in the indoor attraction category and some of my favorites actually take up a little, a decent amount of time. Like at the Magic Kingdom make sure you're going to the Tiki Room. It's fun, corny, and it's air-conditioned.
Yeah, and it's dark. Get a good nap in there even if you don't like the show, just could she squeeze a little nap in.
Country bears, Dan's favorite. Country bears.
Yeah. Care, self-progress is also a notorious. Ah, let me just say this.
Don't be prepared to get too cool in there.
[7:23] Yeah. It's better than outside, but it's not quite cold. It's shady and it's 20 minutes of not being in the sun.
And getting a, taking a rest. PhilharMagic.
This is a great one. Very. Plus that one you get splashed a little bit. Yeah, you know our magic is, Quite the respite from the Sun and it's an awesome, Attraction the show is great. The effects are good. They're that's a charming, Wonderful show that one another one. That's a good break from the heat is in fantasy land is, Voyage of the Little Mermaid. Oh It's true is pretty nice. It's mostly Really culling that cue.
Yeah. Rocks give you like a cave effect.
Yeah. And they're blowing air conditioning into a indoor, outdoor-ish cue.
Right.
And then you hit that spot where you go under the sea and they blast you with the hands so that it feels like you're underwater and from there on out it's cold, chill, and...
I used to recommend Storytime with Belle too, but still not back.
Yeah, it is. Is it finally back? When did this happen? Yeah.
Some people just recently. About a year and a half ago. Ugh.
[8:33] I'm fairly certain. Let me talk about candy dandy Walt Disney World at that just a few months ago, Yeah, it's very recently that it'll, Well, there you go Enchanted tales with Bell another great one in the Magic Kingdom that if you really had some little girl I might like to go see that we're gonna do that this weekend. Yes.
[8:53] She will stuff her shitucky mushrooms Yeah, it's open. It was just a good long attraction too. And some of the best special effects, in the Magic Kingdom. That freaking character was in the way of it.
Definitely. I'm so glad that's back. It was, that took a really long time to come back.
Yeah. Uh, moving over to Epcot, indoor stuff there. What do you like at Epcot?
There's so much indoor stuff there. I like the Pixar Film Fest. Pixar shorts. Love that.
I've never done that.
[9:25] You're fans of the Pixar shorts. My son Owen has always loved those.
They're all really cute. I've never set foot in there.
You should! It's air conditioned and you can sit! So's my house.
Yeah, I can watch those shorts on Disney Plus. Yes, but if I'm at Epcot and I really need a break and I'm with kids… I leave.
Well, these are tips for families who are wanting to visit in the summer to watch it.
There's always my favorite rope drop attraction, living with the land.
Living with the land, yeah. There you go.
You get a little bit of respite from heat there since it's a boat ride, although the ... Until you get into the glass aquarium. ... the greenhouse.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That warms up a little bit, but it's still better than the humidity outside.
Another favorite that we mentioned just last week, the best ride in the park over in the Mexico Bay. Oh, yeah. The three girls.
The three girls. That's a nice long boat ride. and there's so much going on in there, it's amazing.
[10:27] Yeah. Can have TV screens and water. Uh-huh.
And occasionally functioning Donald Duck animatronics. Yeah, 50% of the time, animatronics at the end.
But on the plus side, you can have a margarita before and after.
It always feels super good inside the Mexico Pavilion pyramid.
It feels amazing in there. And what a terrific spot to get a marg.
Margarita. It is freezing cold in there and so, so good. Dark.
[10:59] The seas is fun. That's really great for kids, especially. And there's an attraction in there.
And then you can let them run around looking at the fish.
Turtle talk was good. Good cold show, nice 20 minute or so, 15, 20 minute attraction.
That's a good little show.
Really all of Epcot is an indoor attraction. That's true. Yeah.
You got to sweat it out in between shows, in between things, but all of Epcot, yes.
They're old showcase even you sweat between indoor things, but it's generally good.
All the little shops in all of the world showcases are great.
They really are. I only recently discovered the one back in China.
It's extensive, it has all kinds of cool stuff.
Oh yeah, like $5,000 vases from the Ming Dynasty and gigantic jade sculptures.
But also cool and affordable stuff like cheap fans. Oh yeah, yes, that too.
Stuffed pandas. Actually, that was one of the kids, Presley's favorite souvenirs one year was a cheap little silk fan from there.
I had always just stopped at that little shop that's along the path there.
I'd never gone all the way back into China. We found all kinds of cool stuff.
I think Jeff got a cute little kimono for his dog.
[12:18] May she rest in peace. Yes. Thanks for bringing that up, Athers.
He really took the tone down, especially when I was just about to joke that the kimono was for himself.
It is now, because she can't wear it.
No. All right, moving over to Hollywood Studios. What do you like that's indoors and sit down?
Let me tell you where not to go in Hollywood Studios.
All of Toy Story Land is... Bootsphere. ...a hellscape. Yeah.
There is no air inside the morning. Yeah. There is no air shaded.
It is just a hellscape.
They finally put up all those umbrellas along the queue for slinky dog, because that was, I mean, talk about people passing out from.
Eats.
That was a bad generally speaking, like Disney is full of a lot of indoors, I guess the toy story Midway mania is, is it in the, or indoor ride, But everything else there is outdoor.
Just it's, it gets cleaned.
[13:23] It's as if Andy built a theme park, fun, little attraction in the middle of, I don't know, a parking lot behind his house.
It's awful.
It is so hot. Yeah. That is one of the many spots that is best toward at night.
Yeah. It looks really cool at night. The light and I'm very rarely there at night, but when you, when I am, It's very cool. Lighting is cool.
So I'll lit up with little Christmas tree lights and angles and everything, but that is hot there.
[13:55] Two of my favorites, Muppet Vision 3D. Cory and Dora love that show. I love the Muppets.
And now they have that little theater that plays all the Mickey Mouse shorts.
And I love Mickey the mouse. So I like that one too.
You can sit in a cool chair that looks like her shorts.
I want those chairs. Frozen sing-along still going on. That's a little respite from the heat.
Yeah. And you get snoped on at the end. Yeah, it's back. That's a good show.
And it's cold in there. Yeah. Actually, it's almost.
Gross. Oh, you're making me tear to death there. If you have little tops, you could do Playhouse Disney live on stage.
I've never actually done that one at Walt Disney World.
I've only been to the version in France.
[14:44] Oh, I have, that was, but it's been so long, it was back when Bear in the Blue House was still back in the era.
Yeah, they have totally different characters now. Of course.
Bear in the Blue House has been off the air since whatever year.
1992. A long time ago. It's 2007.
We talked about Animal Kingdom being early in the day park.
There's not a ton. There are some great indoor attractions there, though.
Festival of the Lion King is a fabulous show.
Not to be missed. That's inside.
And you're ready to get inside because that whole sweaty queue is outside. Queue is outside.
You line up outside and then they go, all right, who's ready to get in here to this covered outdoor spot?
It's also hot and terrible where we line you up for another 30 minutes.
What else is indoors at Animal Kingdom? Tough to be a, that's a true revised forum.
And it's, that's a good show.
If you're not having a panic attack and having to paw your way through a bunch of screaming rats to get your face out of there, hopefully that doesn't happen anywhere.
Both the Pandora attractions. That's true. And the line for flight, flights of passage could be long.
Yeah.
[16:06] Yeah. You can take the train out to conservation station and there's some indoor stuff out there.
There's an animation experience and you can go do the little tour where you see the working vet clinic.
Yeah, that's all there now. So. Never been out there. It's actually pretty cool.
Especially if you time it, when they're doing some kind of procedure on an animal in the vet area, it's cool to watch.
See him doing an ultrasound on a tiger or something. Oh, can you watch them do surgery, like on their butthole?
Specifically that, I'm not sure, but yes, they sometimes do surgical procedures.
Tastefully draped, so you can't really tell. Yes. And they put those blue cloths on there.
And you said, yeah, 3-4-0.
Yeah. You can do whatever you want, Jeff. I should really listen to all the words you say before I respond.
That's a trap. That's a trap.
That's one you always fall for. Yes.
There's another thing you've got to be prepared for if you're vacationing in the summer in Florida.
Oh, body odor.
I do recommend remembering to put on deodorant.
No, I was going to say rain. I meant the body odor of the other people.
You've got to rain every day. Now my personal way of dealing with rain is going inside to sit at a bar and have a drink.
There it is.
[17:36] That's not really for everyone. Especially my three-year-old.
Yeah. I actually have a lot of friends who are poncho people.
They love it when it rains because it clears out the parks and they will just put on a poncho or a raincoat or umbrella and keep on truckin'.
I mean unless it's a really bad thunderstorm that slows you down or floods the Magic Kingdom, which I have experienced, it is actually a good time to just keep going because a lot of people flee and you can see the line waits, times go down.
I don't mind truck slogging around with an umbrella. I cannot wear one of those trash bags.
No, I'm not a poncho person.
It makes me feel too hot.
Yeah. Yeah. You get soupy underneath there.
You can get some really lightweight raincoats that are a little bit more breathable than a poncho.
It's a good idea to keep an eye on the radar too, just so you can know what's coming when.
Does anybody have a favorite weather app?
Mine is not so accurate for weather forecasting because it's the one that that has swear words in it and is just funny.
But a lot of people discontinue that dark sky, Apple bought it and shut it down. Yeah.
AccuWeather is pretty good. Yeah. That's what I use.
Anything that has a radar you can look and see is good.
[19:03] I used to love dark sky. It was pretty good. And the one that's just on the iPhone.
[19:09] That one's gotten better, especially if you turn on high accuracy location.
It gives me pretty accurate, like, hey, it's going to rain in 15 minutes.
I get those notifications now too.
Yeah. Light rain starting in 15 minutes at your location.
And it's usually pretty accurate.
And in Central Florida, that's going to be somewhere in the 3 to 5 PM timeframe. Yep. Right.
And if it's a September, it's going to start at 3 o'clock and never stop.
Yeah. That's a little bit of a monsoony time in September.
I like to, when it starts raining, just go find somewhere to, yeah, sit and have some, snacks or some drinks and then stay there the rest of the day.
Yes. Yeah. Or it's another excellent time to check out any of those indoor shows, especially the longer ones. Anybody have any favorite cooling gear?
Jeff discovered one, was it maybe two summers ago that we saw people with the neck fans? The neck fans.
They're the best. Make fun of them at first.
They're a little stupid, but then I realized I don't care about that.
Yeah. You just don't care about that. So, they are the best ones that I've found, have two little round fans, and they're connected to buy just a flexi...
Bendy thing in between and so now I can you wear them around your neck and then they point at your face But you can also set them on a table if you're sitting down to eat you can.
[20:39] Position them so they blow on you while you're eating like pointing up at you from a table or whatever But they're awesome You can point one down your skirt and one up at your face while you're walking around You can point them both down your shirt. If you do get rained on I, I discovered this at a concert I went to a couple of summers ago with my son.
I was getting rained on and when I was soaking wet and then it was over, I just pointed it down my shirt to dry me off inside.
Oh, nice.
And that was great. My dumb son, who refused to wear a raincoat or a neck fan because he wouldn't look cool at the concert, was standing there wet and hot and I had a fan and it was dry and cool. Nice.
We ran into a friend in the parks in the Magic Kingdom recently who recommends a belt fan.
That was Dave Beer. That was no friend. He had two fans on his belt. One pointed up his shirt and one pointed down his pants.
Yeah, I've never been more jealous. That wind blowing right up your spine actually does a decent job.
Yeah, that looked pretty good.
I did see some newer neck fans recently. I don't know how well they work, but they look like Geordie LaForge visors.
We got, I don't like them. They don't work.
Yeah. It just looks like it might be big.
Yeah. Cause it blows all the way around, but it's, they're very heavy.
I, we, I bought one super loud and they're not very accommodating.
[22:08] They don't get longer. So you can't adjust them for a bit.
You have a little neck, it may work for you, but they're crazy loud.
[22:16] And the heaviness was what killed it for my son. He prefers his old pair of very light, the ones that Jeff recommends.
We got them on Amazon for maybe, what, 20 bucks? Yeah. They're like between 14 and 20.
They're cheap and they're lightweight and they're rechargeable.
So we, he has two and one's always charging in the room so that when we take a break, he can swap them out.
Okay. And pro tip, if you have one of those little mobile battery packs.
You can just have a cord so it stays charging in your pocket while you're wearing it.
And you can combine it with those cooling neck gaiters you can buy in the parks or get on Amazon that you see people you get them wet and then you fix them around your neck.
Gel pack filled underpants.
Oh that would be a great idea. Put that and could be quaint bracing when you first put them on.
And then swap you later on. But you can get a sweet spot right in the middle.
There's a three of us for about an hour.
[23:18] Those cooling towels are my favorite scam though, because it's like most of them don't have a special gel or it's just a piece of cloth.
I can do the same thing with, some of them are literally a shammy and I can do the same thing with just a bandana around.
I don't advocate paying 20 bucks for the ones they sell in the parks, but.
[23:39] There's two things that you can do. Take your underwear off.
It's wet anyway. Rinse them out in the water fountain, bring them out, wear it around your neck for a little while.
Cool off and put them back on and cool off your junk.
Don't do that. That works. More seriously, I'm an advocate. I've done this several times.
If you're wearing a ball cap, literally just soak that ball cap down and put it on.
And it does the same thing. That evaporative, water evaporating, cools your head down.
And with your head feeling cold, the recipe feels better.
That's true. I know it looks like a wet head ceiling.
Kids love a misting fan. They sell those in the parks, too. Get your own for cheap before you leave from home.
As a glasses wearer, I condone this. You know what? Sometimes I hate that, but if I'm walking through the parks and some kid accidentally missed me with his fan, it's delightful. He gets punched in the face. I'm not angry. I do not get angry.
Like a misting fan, even with glasses. Yeah.
I like them. I love, that's one of the things I love about the area outside of the Jungle Cruise.
I love those Dickey statues.
And there's that spot over near Space Mountain too that's like a Coca-Cola something. That's just a big giant misting fan.
[24:57] Yeah, that looks like the little rocket ship we're going on.
And our favorite rocket ship.
Walk through there, get all misted down and cooey off. That's nice.
Do you mean the rocket ship from Flight of the Navigator? That is what that is.
[25:11] Jeff was thinking Lil' Einsteins. Yes. Is that the rocket ship from the Flight of the Navigator?
Sure is. Not only is it designed after it, it is one of the ships that they used in the making of the film. Hold the phone.
Yeah.
They painted it red at the top of that building. Huh.
[25:28] Pretty cool, right? There's a couple of other places in some of the parks that you can set kids free in splash areas.
What, uh, what is that splash pad boat thing back in the circus? Yeah, no, it's not a boat.
It's it's Casey Jr. Circus. Why did I think it was a really fun one?
It's a fun one. The elephant squirt doesn't Donald Duck. Oh, used to be back there before it was circus themed.
You're thinking of Toontown and Disneyland, aren't you? And that, too.
No, but I think it was it did used to be before they rethemed.
Donald Duck's boat, Mickey's house, whatever, you know, it's Toontown and circus land and.
Epcot has some little splash pads. I have actually once had to go buy a towel in the gift shop because, oh, when Owen was three, he just played in those little squirty fountains for an hour and was drenched from head to toe.
[26:30] Yes. There's a little pad, one of those pads over by the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a lot of fun.
And then also the jumping fountains over by imagination. If you time it right and you stand in the right spot, you can catch the water as it jumps across the aisle.
Yeah, my kids have fun playing with that last. I wonder if we don't really know yet what that journey of water attraction is going to be, if there's going to be an opportunity to interact with the water.
Oh, here we go. What's it gonna be?
Lame, I knew you were gonna say that.
I think it's, I am optimistic about it.
I have a feeling just based on how Moana interacts with the pool, it's going to be similarly.
If you want to get wet, you can. And who among us doesn't? That is true.
We talked about taking a midday break to go to the pool. Let's talk about Walt Disney World pools because there are a lot of great ones. Anybody have a favorite?
I mean, Stormalong Bay is.
Gold standard. Yeah, I've never been in that one. I said it's good. What are you poor?
I've just never stayed there. I have a large family, Three, but they're all pretty great. There's all the all the hotel pools are pretty good. They really are.
[27:53] The B motel over there and the Disney Springs collection I like the ones that have great pool bars. This is gonna come as a shock, I'll tell you this, the pool bars at The Values are even great.
I've spent a lot of hours at those at the Art of Animation and that's the Pop Century, Pedals bars, probably where I've spent the most of my hours at pool bars.
When Wyatt was a lad, while he'd splash around in those pools, I would sit my butt at the Pedals bar at Pop Century.
Yeah, they've got a bunch of great drinks, iced or un-iced and frozen. Yes.
[28:39] I'm looking forward to spending some time at the pool at the Polynesian this weekend when I'm on Sophie duty. Yeah, have you ever been to the Polynesian?
They have a great splash pad and it's, and it's zero, the pool has zero entry and it's got that cool slide in the volcano. It's a great pool.
Yeah. Another great pool with the zero entry.
It's also the biggest pool in all of Walt Disney World is the Big Blue Pool at Art of Anime.
That's a really great pool. That's a good pool. It's got fun splash pad type water features right by the waiting area entrance and it's just, it's huge.
It's a good fun pool. They showed the movies right there at night on the screen.
Bring me some ibuprofen. There's a lot of children.
Yeah. That's true.
We used to love the vomiting clown slide at Boardwalk, but it's not a vomiting clown anymore. It's uh, no, it's the Keister coaster. It's really, it is really cute.
I've never been in that one either.
It's a great water slide too.
D1 adds, Animal Kingdom is great more chill vibe there, but still tons of fun nice bar You can sit at or near good service and everything water slide. I love that pool, We like to do night swimming at Polly because then you can watch the fireworks from in the pool.
[29:59] Protests living right there. Yeah sure is that's when you know, you've made it. I, think it's surprisingly lame pool is the, contemporary. Yeah, it's just a pool. Like a big, yeah, flat pool. I think that's partially true. I mean, I guess pools are always flat. Yeah. It's just kind of a product of when it was built. Yeah. And they just did a big refurb on that pool, but they didn't change it really at all. Yeah, I was just looking at it and that's still just a big old basic pool. It's fine. It does have a nice splash area for I really liked the vibe of the pool at the Wilderness Lodge.
I just like that area in between the legs of the hotel. Both pools there are really nice.
There's the pool over by the DVC section.
That's a little more quiet and they have a first come first serve cabana over there that's very nice as service.
Good pool bar service.
[30:54] They used to, they used to have a pool bar right by the pool and they got rid of it, turned it into a spa.
Pool and they got rid of it, turned it into a spa which didn't close, and now they just have geyser point.
Which has a walk-up window, but then a full service, like, open air, awesome bar and restaurant thing.
I hope they turn that thing that was briefly before COVID a nail salon, I hope they turn it back into a pool bar.
It'd be nice if you just had a close by walk-up window.
It's a little bit of a walk over to Geyser Point, not bad, but.
Doesn't feel like a pool walk-up bar.
Yeah, it's a separate location, feels like. But that's a terrific thing. Definitely.
Cool and vibe of there. I really think scheduling sit down meals is key in the summer too, because you get a reservation somewhere that you know you're gonna be inside in the air conditioning seated for either, lunch or dinner.
Just renews your soul.
Yeah. My thing when we would take summer trips is to schedule our big meal that with a reservation for lunchtime and then dinner is you, when it's cooled off, the sun has set, you can go for quick service. Yeah.
[32:09] That's one of my, it's often easier to find a reservation for a lunch.
People always want to like go and take a shower and clean up and do these nice dinners, but honestly, just show up sweaty and have a nice meal in the middle of the day and cool off and talk about your day and what you have done, what you accomplished and what you didn't get to do yet, and you might still want to try to do during the day.
Just that cool off period for a good solid hour is important. Really is.
And you could also, if you've got little kids, schedule nap time at the hottest part of the day.
That's like- Or if you've got 52 year old guys, just- Staying on site is.
Think it's key in the summertime. Being able to go back to your resort quickly and easily and not having to travel off property to get back to your hotel. That's a buzzkill in the summer.
Yeah. The idea of trying to traverse Magic Kingdom's parking lot.
[33:10] You know, the summer day, that's like Death Valley. You want nothing to do with that.
Oh, it's even worse at the Animal Kingdom and I don't think the parking lot trams are back at Animal Kingdom yet.
No. I haven't seen them there. They're only back at two of the four parks, right?
Just at- I think it's just Epcot and Magic Kingdom. Epcot and Magic Kingdom.
Oh, and Hollywood Studios. That one is a big, hot parking lot too.
I drive to Hollywood studios and I'm always seeing people trekking across that long, long, feel bad for them.
What do you park up front or something? Yeah, sure do. Preferred parking, baby.
Or park somewhere else and take the Skyliner. Yeah.
That's my, I like that. You get up there in the sky and get moving, you get a little breeze coming through.
Yeah, how about those not turning out to be the sweaty, awful sweat lodge boxes we thought they were going to be? Actually, not bad.
It's like they thought about it before implementing them or did some research.
Yeah, I feel like we were all skeptics and it turned out to be not so bad.
Shocking.
Yeah. So what's your favorite? What's your favorite frosty cold treat?
[34:35] Everybody's go-to seems to be the Dole Whip. I do love a Dole Whip float, but you know what I like even better than that is Dole Whip with some coconut rum poured on the top.
You can find that at the Animal Kingdom or Spice Rum.
I like the Myers Dark Rum float. I like both of those.
I really like that Peter Pan one. That's the Sprite and Lime Dole Whip.
Yeah, that's been gone for a while. Unfortunately, I think it comes back every once in a while.
They decided to do seven dwarf ice cream cones there instead and have a different flavor every month.
Oh, I'm glad you said seven dwarf. I meant to say that queue is exceptionally cold.
Yeah.
Nice and dark. And, uh, really any of your dual whip items or your citrus swirls and they, all that, all those are good.
So a lot of cold, good treats, Mickey bars and all that good old spitty soft serve.
Yeah. They've got plenty of that. Frozen banana on a stick.
I always liked those, but I have to let it sit for a while.
Cause that thing will hurt your teeth. If you try to, so there was doing a lot of work.
Yeah. You're just bobbing around it on it, trying to warm it up.
[35:53] This is a family establishment. Yeah.
They're like, sir, we're going to need you to put your pants back on and leave.
If Jeff had a dollar for every time he's heard that, I'd have $40.
Wow. That's pretty good.
[36:08] So maybe more important, even than a cold treat, do you have any recommendations for a frosty cold beverage to cool you down?
So many frosty cool beverages. Well, yeah, I just leave. Yeah.
Go over to Trader Sam's.
I really like the pool bar. I don't mind that.
Oh, that's a good one. I really like the pool bar at Riviera because it's covered and there's fans and they have some delicious margaritas and really good drinks in there.
I can't think of any specific drink, but I do love that place.
I also love Nomad Lounge has a really good, really boozy drink.
What's that strong drink?
Yes. That's like a strong drink that they then poured liquor all over the top of.
That one is called the Lamu Libation. Yes, it's got all three kinds of ramen is topped with 151.
There's also a bar that's right near the base of the Yeti ride with Scott, but you're really good drinks. That's a good spot. It's never crowded.
There's just a walk up little window there. They've got some good drinks.
I can't remember the name of it.
I'm trying to remember the name of it. Not Dawa Bar. That's the one in Harambe.
The Jawa bar is where I get my dole whips with booze on them.
[37:30] Right across from...
Across from the Tusker house. Yes, and then kitty corner for all the drums Where the kids like to stop and beat the African drums? Oh, yeah the thirsty River bar and crack snacks Yeah, which features?
Hey, have you guys seen that? They have a new bar pop-up bar in Hollywood?
Do you know you had a Jones theme? I gotta check that one out. It looked like there was some great I mean cool props what they call it the Indiana Jones Den of Destiny bar And I think they missed the opportunity to call it the bar of destiny, Yeah, that would have been yes, but I'll allow it and I will check it out, I'm just happy to have more Indiana Jones, Content Absolutely and giving And it's not coming up in the my Disney experience app what they have at the den of destiny, The two drinks that I saw one was basically an old-fashioned, tracks and But it was called the dusty fedora. I think oh nice, the diaper then.
[38:46] Pop up this car. Here we go. They have the adventurous margarita, which looks like a Cadillac, Margarita. Adventurous Margarita, that's the worst name I've ever heard. Adventurous. Adventurous, yeah. The weathered fedora is an old-fashioned, yeah. And then they, what's, then they have a non-alcoholic. Oh yeah, a green tea pomegranate, blood orange. That, that, that old-fashioned though, it's like a Christmas old-fashioned. It's got sweet vermouth. It's got vanilla in it. Yeah. Ginger bitters star anise.
Cinnamon and nutmeg. I've got a star anus. I was just trying to... You're a star, baby.
I'm just trying to be like my hero Jeff Williams.
Do they have snacks there or just the drinks? It just looks like there's some merch and some props and drinks.
I don't see any snacks. I mean that's still...
Go get you a Indiana Jones drink. I'm excited for this for the new Indiana Jones. It looks good.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not hearing anything good about oh really, but I enjoyed the third one. So the third one.
[40:04] No, I'm sorry. The fourth one. I like them all so I Just want Indiana Jones. I like I love Phoebe Waller bridge, so I'm excited to see her She's playing Indy's daughter He's a per cheese really funny, She seems like a real fleabag to me. Yeah.
That's a TV show. That's totally excellent. And it's hysterical.
But it's not really family friendly.
Let's see. A place that you don't want to cool down. I'm just going to be there where I do like to cool down.
Please don't go swimming in the Epcot fountains that are not meant for splashing. Oh, man.
Man, I was really hot one day and was watching a concert from the Epcot fountain.
In the American pavilion, it was so tempted just to turn around and face in and put my little feet in there to cool off because they were hot and they were swollen and I had my shoes off.
I did not because I have some cooths and had a little home training.
I did not do that. Just these jackasses got all the way in and laid down in there.
That was too sane. Don't do that.
These were Canadian people. The spouts are not swimming pool.
Hey, you're an American now, jocks. I'll tell you one thing, I would have been a little bit afraid I would be electrocuted or something.
Oh, for sure.
Yeah. Fighting in there.
[41:32] There are some approved places for swimming and splashing outside of the swimming pools I talked about.
There's some water parks. Yep.
Actually, there's a water park, I suppose, at the time. Yeah, we feel like to have one of the two.
The other thing, one open. I, that does not make sense during the summer.
I get it, in the winter times, but why don't we have both of them open in the summer?
Maybe they looked at their park attendant numbers and thought, huh, maybe we don't have to pay.
Yeah, that could be. Maybe we could take the staff from here and...
Which one is open right now?
Should I figure that out? Lagoon? I think so. I think it's Typhoon Lagoon.
Yeah. I can't keep up. They alternate. Yeah.
[42:14] Yeah, it looks like it's Typhoid Lagoon. Yeah, they used to alternate which one was closed during the fall and winter months, but now it's just lately they only have one open.
Yeah.
And it's, I think it is, who knows. But that's a, that is a great water park.
It's, my kids really love the wave pool at that one.
There's a nice icy cold spot to snorkel with sharks and they're, they've got some great, the snorkeling is gone now, you're right.
Because that one child was killed.
No they turned it into something, they re-themed it. Now I cannot remember what it was. Frozling.
Yeah, I think that's right. No, I think I said the other one.
But yeah, the snorkeling area, I forgot, you're right, that's gone now.
Ugh. That used to be such a great feature of that. Screw that, don't be quit snorkel.
Can you still learn to surf there in the wave pool?
Nope, because that one kid was killed.
Oh, man, no, I'm just making making stuff up.
Oh, nothing funnier than child. Well, yeah, that's why we keep you around.
Keep the mood light.
[43:27] I've never been to either of those water parks. Neither have I.
I like a water park, but it's just the way we end up visiting the theme parks is always, yeah, I'm a four day at the parks kind of thing.
And there's four parks. So it doesn't work out.
One of these days I would like to go. If I was a millionaire like Heather, I would probably have longer trips where I do putt putt golf and do the water park and all this.
The putt putt is delightful. It's fun. I'm a good. I've been converted to the putt side.
Winter Summerland is a fun putt course. You got to try it.
Yes, it is. And it's the one I prefer in the, it's the one I prefer in the summer because it's shadier.
I don't know of activities to do at Disney World. I'll just go to a movie or something.
[44:18] I'm not mini golf. That is, there is an option for cooling down.
Go to the movie set. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I finally did that.
All my years of going down there, I'd never been to a movie.
We finally did that. We saw Ant-Man. How was that?
Just a movie theater. Anything cool about it?
They have a side that's dine-in, so you can have a full meal while you're picking back in your recliner and watching the movie. It's great.
Slurp down wings. Yeah.
Living the dream.
That's how you know you've made it. hamburgers and full menu.
It's pretty disgusting for the person sitting right next to you.
I gotta say, listen to you slurping.
How those chicken bones suck it on a chili dog outside the tasty freeze.
[45:02] If you completely irrelevant, there's a guy who made a video where he's saying that song, but he replaced all the words with sucking on a chili dog.
I mean, the tasty freeze and there's a sign hanging up. It is John Mellencamp says, do not serve this man.
[45:25] Okay. That's good. Yeah, that's probably a good policy in general.
Apparently he's turned into a real crab ass.
[45:34] The most important tip though, it's hydrate or die. This is true.
Wow. That took a turn. That's your only two options. A hydrated theme park visitor is a happy.
That is true. Yeah, I drink a lotta watta when I'm there.
Yeah, either bring your water bottles or you can get water around the parks.
Go ask for some water at a quick serve counter.
They still do that. They still do that, yes. They will give you that.
But now they charge you $42. I don't think that's true. It used to be free.
You get yourself an ice water voucher on your way in. They will, they still do that because they don't want you to pass out from heat stroke.
You're less likely to spend money if you're passed out from the heat stroke.
First aid staff is expensive. Yes, that's true. That's right.
I like to buy smart waters from the little booths around there.
Yes. Get you some electrolytes along with your water. That's right. Smart. Yeah.
Every so often you got to mix up the waters with a Powerade or a smart water or something It's gonna put that salt back in your body.
Mm. And salt. Or I'll just eat a pickle over there in Liberty Square. Yes.
One of those big, giant pickles.
Giant pickle in a bag. You can dip your cigarette in the pickle juice.
That's right. Like my old Uncle Walt used to do. It's like a gong wall.
[46:58] For pickleback shots, that's probably not how you stay hydrated, right?
No, but they're good. Darn. I doubt it. Yeah. Yeah.
[47:08] So yeah, please make sure you're hydrated. Stay cool.
There's lots of fun you can have without sweating. Yes, don't be afraid.
Like everybody wrote in my high school yearbook, stay cool.
Stay cool. And don't party too hard. Don't be afraid of a summer vacation in Orlando.
[47:25] No. So yeah, last year was the first time I was ever in Orlando in June and it was not nearly as bad as I expected. It was hot.
It's hot. But if you're afraid of heat in June, I mean, heat in Orlando, you just can't really ever go.
It's basically the summertime there from March to, right, March.
And here's the thing, Heather and I live in Michigan and it's going to be 90, like it's It's 95 in Michigan.
Yep. It gets hot here and we don't have any fun attractions.
That's right. We have to just live our daily drudgery.
If it's going to be 90, I'd rather be in Orlando at the Walt Disneyland Florida campus. I'll say this.
So I live in Birmingham, Alabama, and it is sometimes equally hot here, but I do find that when I'm here, I'm not outside for eight hours a day.
Yeah, that's true. So it is a little bit different.
I'm not just outside at Disney World all day long. You gotta...
You gotta... You gotta...
[48:34] Music.
[48:55] Refrigeration. Yes, me too. Let's make ice cubes. You imagine having to buy an entire month's worth You gotta...
Of ice, keep it in a box, and chop it up. Oh no. And that's when they had ice you could buy.
That's right. Imagine cave people in warm climates just like, oh good. It's hot. Yeah, it's hot enough to do nothing about it. Paint on this wall is strongly worded.
[49:17] Music.
[49:32] That's where you can find me buying stuff. And things? Shopping and drinking and eating.
Does that sound like a bad joke? I don't know how good trips are so expensive.
Hopefully you've been taking notes so that you're ready to beat the heat. Beat my what? Exit?
I was really hoping we would get one of those before the end of the episode.
I was surprised we didn't get one earlier.
Yeah. Yeah, I would have contributed more if I knew what we were talking about.
